How to Apply Wall Primer Before Painting

Wall preparation and surface porosity play a significant role in how well a paint system performs. Applying primer correctly helps seal the surface, improve adhesion and create a more uniform base for the coats that follow.

Wall surface preparation before applying primer

Step-by-Step Application

01

Prepare the Surface

Ensure the wall is clean and dry. Remove dirt, grease and loose particles. Sand shiny surfaces for better adhesion. Fill cracks and imperfections.

02

Stir the Primer

Stir 24M Primer thoroughly before use to ensure consistent texture and performance.

03

Dilute

Dilute with up to 40% clean water. As a practical reference, 1 litre of primer can be mixed with up to 400 ml of clean water.

04

Apply

Apply using a brush, roller or airless spray. Ensure even coverage across the surface.

05

Apply 1–2 Coats

Apply 1–2 coats depending on the porosity and condition of the surface. More porous surfaces may require additional coats.

Coverage & Drying Times

*Actual coverage may vary depending on substrate, surface condition, porosity, application method and site conditions.

Drying time may vary with temperature, humidity, ventilation and surface conditions.

Why Surface Preparation Matters

Primer consumption varies by substrate and porosity. Sealing porous surfaces creates a better and more uniform base for the subsequent paint system.

Different surfaces—cement, putty-finished walls, interior and exterior substrates—can have different absorption levels and therefore different primer consumption. For project-specific guidance, contact the 24M team.
